UCB
A flexible workplace designed for innovation & collaboration
Context
In 2016, UCB, a global biopharmaceutical company with 7,500 employees in 40 countries, launched a transformation of its workplace environments. The goal was to create human-centric, flexible spaces that align with UCB’s culture, values, and strategic vision. At the Braine-l’Alleud site, the challenge was to rethink 1,500 m² of office space for 100 employees, ensuring it fostered collaboration, focus, and innovation.
Challenge
UCB wanted a workspace that would go beyond aesthetics to genuinely enhance ways of working. The challenge was to design a scalable and adaptable concept that would integrate into UCB’s global workplace strategy while catering to the specific needs of local teams. Employees needed to be actively engaged throughout the process to ensure the new spaces reflected their work dynamics and aspirations.
Solution
Out Of Office worked closely with UCB to develop and implement a flexible workspace tailored to the Braine-l’Alleud team’s needs. The project included:
- Developing macro and micro layouts to optimise space usage.
- Designing bespoke furniture to enhance comfort and flexibility.
- Creating a strong spatial identity through curated materials and furniture.
- Incorporating zones for collaboration, focus, and informal interactions.
The space was structured around key work dynamics:
- Collaborative areas: Designed for teamwork, meetings, and creative sessions.
- Focus zones: Providing quiet spaces for concentration.
- Social spaces: Encouraging informal interactions and team bonding.
- Flexible environments: Adapting to diverse employee needs.
Employees were actively involved in shaping these spaces, ensuring that the new workplace reflected their workflows, corporate culture, and evolving needs.
Result
The Braine-l’Alleud site now features a dynamic, adaptive workplace that embodies UCB’s commitment to innovation and employee well-being. The transformation has led to improved collaboration, enhanced flexibility, and a revitalised corporate culture. This project serves as a blueprint for UCB’s global offices, demonstrating how human-centric workplace design can positively impact engagement and performance.
